Top 5 Nintendo Memes

A catchphrase, an image, a video or hashtag can spread like wildfire and become instilled in internet popular culture. The humble internet meme has evolved into something that is part and parcel with life in the cyber world.

Say something stupid or memorable, you bet your bottom dollar that it will eventually become a meme. Do something stupid or memorable, and you can bet that second bottom dollar that it will eventually become a meme.

Nintedo, a company rich in memorable moments and equally memorable stuff up, has their fair share of internet memes. There’s Iwata holding a banana, Falcon Punch, Luigi’s Death stare, genius Nintendo executives, Reggie’s “not my problem” and many more.

Today, I would like to share my opinion on the top 5 Nintendo Memes. The criteria for the countdown are as follows:

  • Humor
  • Endurance and longevity
  • versatility.

So without further ado, here are my picks on the Top 5 Nintendo Memes.

5. Villager

Villagers evil conspicuous eyes during the reveal trailer Super Smash Bros For Wii U and 3DS have turned this once innocent civilian into a symbol of death. Now villager is an omen of evil and death, a face that is synonymous with a psychotic and ruthless killer. Trails of his evil and destruction have been well documented in imagery and spread across all of the internet.

5. It Prints Money

A meme that is befitting and perfectly describing Nintendo’s success with both the DS and Wii. Never in the history of video game has a company reached such heights. In one generation alone, Nintendo has sold over 250 million hardware and 100’s of million of software. The DS and Wii were quite literally printing money for Nintendo and the executives were rolling in piles of cash. Hopefully in the near future, Nintendo can find their mojo and begin printing that money.

2. Do a Barrel Roll

Enter “Do a barrel roll” into Google’s search engine and prepared to be amazed. The phrase originates from the N64 classic, Star Fox 64 and has been instilled into gaming culture by Peppy’s incessant whining for Fox to do a Barrel Roll. The phrase has become so popular that even the mighty Google has picked up the meme. Peppy’s constant tutelage has paid off, as we will surely continue to “do a barrel roll” for years to come.

7. It’s on like Donkey Kong

The most recognized┬ámeme and likely the most enduring, is the old catch phrase “it’s on like Donkey Kong.” The term signifies a challenge or a time to complete. I, myself, don’t particularly understand the reference to Donkey Kong, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matte. In the age of meme, it was only a matter of time that this timeless saying evolved into a meme.

1. My Body is Ready

Originating from- what is – perhaps one of the most memorable and awkward E3 moments, Reggie’s “my body is ready” has turned into one of the most enduring meme relating to the big N. Apart from the humorous sexual innuendo. The phrase itself is used to convey excitement and hype of an impeding event, most often in regards to a Nintendo Direct or E3 presentation. Personally, I like using it as a sexual innuendo and the versatility of the meme is second to none.
