Pokemon Gym leaders are the main obstacle that stands between a trainer and glory. They are the appetizers before the main course; the main course also being the almighty Pokemon League. Staying true to their reputation, Gym Leaders are exceptionally strong trainers with very powerful Pokemon battling alongside them. Underestimate them at your own peril.
Have you ever thought about – which among all gym leaders – is the strongest and most powerful? With over 50 leaders across 6 regions, the task is a difficult one indeed. To help the curious minds, I would like to share my opinion on who are the top 10 Strongest Pokemon Gym leaders of all time.
So here it is! My top 10 list for the Strongest Pokemon Gym leaders of all time.
10. Laverre City Gym Valerie
Just barely scrapping through to the top 10 is the first Fairy-type specialist – Valerie – from the Laverre Gym. Her team has an excellent balance of offensive and defensive type Pokemon including Mawile, Mr. Mime and Sylveon. Mr. Mime is a decent foil to the other two, able to set up screens. Meanwhile, Mawile and Sylveon take up the offensive role. Unfortunately, Valerie does not have more key Fairy Pokemon such as Togekiss and Clefable to strengthen her team.
9 Saffron City Gym Leader Sabrina
The original master of the spoon-bending type, Sabrina teleports her way into the top 10. Going by her team when in the rematch battle during Soul Silver and Heart Gold, Sabrina is arguably the strongest Psychic Pokemon trainer that the series has ever seen. She has a powerful team that consist of Jynx, Mr. Mime, Wobbuffet, Espeon, Gallade and the signature Alakazam. As you can see this spoon will be difficult to bend.
3 Sunyshore Gym Leader Volkner
Volkner has a stark resemblance Namikaze Minato from Naruto. Naruto reference aside, Volkner is arguably the strongest electric Pokemon trainer the series has to offer. His electrifying Pokemon are speedy and their moveset cover a number of types. Volkner is an intelligent Gym leaded that has all his bases covered. His team consists of Electivire, Luxray, Raichu, Rotom-Fan, Jolteon and Electrode. There is a reason why he is the last Gym leader of the Sinnoh League.
7 Fortree City Leader Winona
Winona is without a doubt, the strongest Flying type trainer in the Pokemon franchises history. By the fourth rematch, Winona’s pocket monsters has developed and grown into an exceptional flying mono-type team. Noctowl, Tropius and Pelipper are pushovers, but her final three are as good as they get from the flying Pokemon family. Dragonite leads the attack, while Skarmory preforms a defensive role. Altaria is her most dangerous able to sweep with one Dragon Dance under its belt.
6. Cianwood City Gym Leader Chuck
A master of Fighter types, Chuck punches his way into 6th spot. Chuck is known for its hard hitting and brutally powerful fighting Pokemon. Chucks Pokemon World Tournament consists of Poliwhirl, Machamp, Conkeldur, Hitmontop, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee. While his team lacks type versatility, it more than makes it up for it in pure offensive strength.
5. Canalave City Gym Byron
Byron is an expert in steel types, which not surprisingly shows in his versatile team. Byron’s Pokemon Word Tournament has Bastiodon, Excadrill, Bronzong, Magnezone, Aggron and Forretress. There are a few throw-aways like Bastiodon and Aggron, but the rest are exceptional Pokemon. Forretress and Bronzong are solid walls, meanwhile Magnezone and Excadrill can deal massive damage to unprepared folks. Although Bryon’s team has a massive weakness against fire moves, it does a have a admirable type variations.
4. Cinnabar Gym Leader Blaine
Blaine faces stiff competition from fellow Fire afficionado, Flannery. But at the end of the day, Blaine wins out thanks to his Arcanine, Charizard and Magmorter. A fire-type mono-team may not appear threatening initially, but when you carefully dissect each Pokemon and their sets, their potency becomes more apparent. And by looking Blaine Pokemon this is certainly true. Arguably his most strongest Pokemon is Arcanine, an extremely potent physical sweeper with excellent type coverage.
3. Viridian City Gym Leader Giovanni
The leader of the infamous Team Rocket, Giovanni earns the 3rd place spot with his devoted team of ground type Pokemon. His outdated team in the original gen can be replaced by the stronger World Pokemon Tournament outfit. I mean a much stronger team. Giovanni’s modern team has Rhyperior, Garchomp, Nidoking, Gliscor, Krookodile and Hippowdon. It is a nice combination of offensive and defensive Pokemon. Garchomp is Giovanni’s most frightening Pokemon, it itself enough to elevate Giovanni above most
2. Opelucid City Gym Leader Drayden
Drayden’s affinity for dragon-types is a testament to his might. One of the few notable dragon masters that is not an elite four member or a champion, Drayden stands above most Gym leaders with his collection of extremely powerful Dragon Types. His team consists of Haxorus, Druddigon, Hydreigon, Flygon, Altaria and Salamence. It is a team that can even challenge the mighty Lance from the Indigo Plateau Pokeon League. In fact, I’ll go so far to say that Drayden is good enough for the Pokemon League.
1. Sootopolis City Gym Leader Wallace
Wallace takes top honor of strongest Gym leader. The fact that Wallace eventually went from Gym leader to Pokemon champion is a testament of his talent and skills as a trainer. His Water type specialty allows him to use a variety of Pokemon with Dual-types. As a result Wallace’s team is well-balanced, covering each others weakness and offering various roles for different situation. Gyarados is his most dangerous able to dish out impressive damage while taking able soak up a few. Meanwhile, Wallace’s signature Pokemon – Milotic – is a perfect pivot for the rest of the team. Wallace eventual success as a Pokemon Champion puts him above all other leaders and is my choice for strongest Gym leader.
