Do you have a few extra dollars left in your eShop wallet? You know it’s not enough to buy a full retail game, but you don’t want it to go to waste! Then perhaps consider spending those hard earned dollars on a few gems hidden away beneath clutter of the Nintendo 3DS eShop. I know that the eShop library isn’t quite extensive as other digital marketplaces, but that’s not to say it does not its fair share of good quality games.
So to assist you in your quest for your ideal title, I have decided to create an article detailing my opinion on what are the best 3DS eShop games. Like always this is purely my opinion and can only discuss games that I have played. So if by chance, I have missed one of your favorite eShop games please do not get offended, it was not intentional nor is there any malice.
Before we get started, like with any list or top countdown, it is essential to lay out the criteria. In order to qualify for the list, the title cannot have a physical release and cannot be a virtual console game.
That’s it! So without further ado, here is my opinion on what are the best 3DS eShop games.
Siesta Fiesta is likely a game that you have never heard of. It’s not surprising frankly as this titles has flown under the radar when it was released last year. But I’m here to to correct this grave injustice. Admittedly it’s not the best thing since slice bread, but I did find it fun and that’s all that matters at the end of the day, and isn’t this why we play games. Siesta Fiesta is clever take on the ping-pong gameplay mechanic. Your primary goal is to rally the ball with your bed across a side-scrolling stage, racking up points by hitting blocks. Siesta Fiesta has the charm of the 2D Rayman games with its appealing art-style and whimsical music.
It was a no-brainer to include Gunman Clive into the list. It is easily one of the best games on the Nintendo eShop and arguably the best one dollar you will ever spend. That’s right Gunman Clive is just one dollar on the 3DS eShop (in my currency), so it would be foolish to pass up this title. Don’t let the simplistic visual style mislead you, Gunman Clive is deceptively fun and difficult. It sort of reminds me of the old Mega Man games back in the bit era game where gameplay took precedent above everything else. The precise platform, perfectly timed shots and rhythmic patterns of the enemies are nirvana for the purist gamer.Unfortunately the orgasm of gaming bliss ends as quick as it started.
At first glance SteamWorld Dig seems to be about digging, digging and more digging. On paper it sounds incredibly boring, but underneath all the dirt (pun intended) is a game with subtle depth and most importantly, fun! Gamer’s who enjoy the 2D Metroid games will definitely enjoy SteamWorld Dig. Your essential goal is to dig and explore the inner depth of your uncles mines, uncovering precious minerals, and discovering new abilities and weapons. The campaign will last around 7-8 hours, so there is value for your money. I highly recommend SteamWorld Dig!
Pushmo and its subsequent sequels are considered the best 3DS eShop games to date. I have decided to recommend Pushmo above its sequel because I feel that is the best title to introduce newcomers to the addictive gameplay. You play as the adorable Malo and your essential goal is to move a playground structure of block to create a path to the top. It’s a simple premise for a game, but the block puzzle become devilishly difficult towards the end. Of course there is plenty of value for your money, as there are over 200 puzzles to keep you occupied and that is before the fan made playgrounds.
Was there any doubt? Shovel Knight is, in my opinion, the best 3DS eShop game to date. A modern throwback to retro gaming with a strong emphasis on the old-school sensibilities of game design. Bolstered by the NES style graphic art-syle, Shovel Knight is a 2D sidescrolling action-platformer where players control the eponymous hero in their journey to defeat the Order of No Quarter. Shovel Knight is a not a cheap knock-off of the NES experience prevalent in the indie scene today, the title has a fully fleshed out adventure that will not fail to please. Whether you have money or not, I highly recommend giving Shovel Knight a go.
There are a few games that I deserve to be on the list, but I have not found the time to play yet or not available in my region. So here are a few games that you should definitely check out as well:
- Liberation Maiden
- Mighty Switchforce
- Attack of the Friday Monsters
- Dillon’s Rolling Western
- Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword
- Shantae and the Pirates Curse
- Azure Strike Gunvolt
- Mighty Gunvolt
- Pokemon Trozei
