Nintendo has been fortunate to have a number of titles that have a large and dedicated competitive community. The most noteworthy being the Pokemon – which has annual World Championships – and Super Smash Bros – one of the most popular fighting game. Perhaps the next big eSport title for Nintendo is Splatoon, a tactical third person shooter.
In an interview with the online media publication – Fortune – president of Nintendo America, Reggie Fils-Aime, discuss the relationship between the Big N and the eSport space.
On the relationship, Reggie has expressed Nintendo’s appreciation that the eSport community has embraced Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon.
“We saw success last year with the Smash Bros. Invitational, and Smash Bros. has always been a game in the eSports community. What we’re really gratified to see is that the community has now embraced Super Smash Bros. for Wii U because it has the speed and customization they like. We’re also seeing them embrace Mario Kart 8, as well as Splatoon, in a competitive environment.”
Reggie continued to explain that Nintendo is looking for more proper opportunities for eSport communities to come together and compete beyond E3.
“We’re fortunate that we’ve got the range of content to pull it off in the here and now, and we’re really gratified to see the reactions,. All of that is going to go into the mix as we think about proper opportunities, future E3s as well as potentially taking the idea outside of E3. So it’s something we’re going to be looking at really hard.”
In the past Nintendo has been quite hostile to the Smash competitive community. Since then Nintendo has changed tune being more open to eSport communities, given that they are vital for word of mouth exchange of information.
